Basketball drills for technique catching
- At the whistle each player chooses a position around the three-point line
- Who will stand where is not (yet) told. (chaos)
- The trainer passes to one of the players and that player must try to score while the trainer defends.
- At the whistle, each player runs to an agreed position (designated or mutually determined who will stand where).
- The trainer passes the ball to a player who is trying to score while defending.
- The other players are not allowed to come within the three-point line.
- At the whistle each player runs to their chosen position (agreed place).
- The trainer passes to one of the players and that player must try to score while the trainer defends.
- Now one of the other players may enter the circle and help with the attack. As soon as the ball has been passed, the person without the ball leaves the circle, after which another player may ask for the ball. There are never more than two attacking players within the three-point line.
Repeat each exercise 3 times
- rebounder (1) passes to outlet (2)
- and runs behind the outlet along the sideline to the other side to get the ball back for a layup.
- Outlet (2) passes to a man in center circle (3),
- He then dribbles to approx. the 3-point line and plays a bounce pass to (1) for lay-up.
- (3) takes the rebound and is becomes (1) at the opposite site of the field
- With 10 persons or more, include one (4) in the far corner.
- In that case, (3) passes to (4), which then gives a bounce pass to (1)
- and then grabs the rebound and becomes (1).
- Depends on the number of balls.
- In pairs or alone
- When alone:
- Start at your position, dribble across the basket.
- Set or Jumpshot from your position (Guard, forward, center).
- Up to 8 points.
- In pairs:
- Start at your position, pass to the opposite side of the basket.
- Last pass should be good so that shooter in jumpshot is ready for his/her shot.
- Up to 4 points per player.
- Losers: Slides over the width of the pitch, 1x back and forth.
- Two rows at the three-point line, extended freethrow line.
- 1 row with ball(s). Player row 1 makes quick cut through the bucket.
- Pass row 2 to player row 1.
- Jump stop just past the ring.
- About 1m of basket. Fakeshot.
- Pivoting and reverse lay-up.
- Turn pivot foot around defender. (Keep the defender in the back). 1 shot attempt.
- On 2 baskets at the same time depending on the number of players.
- 1 row of players stands in the corner at the 3-point line without ball. (A)
- 1 row of players stands 1 meter outside the bucket and 1 meter below the free throwing line with ball. (B)
- A runs to edge of the bucket on baseline and blocks (fictional). (2 pilons)
- Cuts to head of the bucket, turns in with right foot, gets pass from B. B follows the pass.
- Defense. A takes shot/ lay-up...
- B moves to row A. Player A catches his own ball and connects in row B.
- Left and right, basic drill for pick & roll offense.
- Can be played with 2 baskets.
- Two men around the bucket for defense
- Three attackers:
- Attacker 1 passes the ball to attacker 2
- All three attackers pass the ball around until one sees a gap and can get into the bucket
- He adjusts the ball and tries to score
- Up to 5 points, then switch roles and the attacker who has scored least stays in the attack.
Requirements:
- Stopping two feet together, pivoting, lay-up and jumpshot must be known
Aim:
- When passing, jump towards the ball with feet coming down correctly to start the next movement. (pivoting, start dribble)
Organization:
1. Coach gives passes from position 1, alternating left and right from under the basket. Give passes where jump-to-the-ball applies.
2. Player starts under the basket (2 groups of 5 to 6 players, of which two/group have a ball) ==> fast; explosive exercise.
3. Run to cone under the basket and quickly pushes himself away towards the cone at spot 2 or 3.
4. Makes movement from the cone to the ball to get the pass and perform a jump-to-the-ball.
5. After getting the ball pivot and attack towards the basket (first lay-up, then shot)
6. After finishing, change sides and pass the ball
Teaching points:
- Rapid explosive movement when running free
- correct ball acceptance (show hands) and foot placement
- pivoting and fast attacks without running errors
- Two rows at the centerline
- The first two have a ball - Right
- From the center line you dribble to the basket:
- Layup (15x hit in a row, a player under the basket catches the ball and counts, play again if the player didn't count)
- Shots from bucket (7 in a row)
- The player under the basket starts when the dribbler starts.
- Coach goes further and further back.
- Player A takes a shot at goal and player B catches.
- Player B takes a shot at goal and player A catches.
- For 1 minute and goals scored is the number of total points.
- Set-up. Two equal lines.
- The first player in each line DOES NOT have a basketball.
- The Activity - begins with the first player in line making a "V-Cut" at the baseline and pops back out to about 12 feet away from the basket and calls for the ball by showing ten fingers to player #2.
- Player #2 passes the ball to player #1.
- Player #1 shoots and gets his own rebound.
- Player #1 then goes to the back of the line giving his ball to #4.
- Since player#2 gave his ball to player #1, he now makes a V-cut to the baseline and the activity repeats itself.
- Coaching Points- Catch and square up to the basket.
- Passing - 50 Passes
- Set-up - Two equal teams out on the court.
- The Object - To make a total of 50 passes.
- Does not have to be consecutive.
- The Game - teams play keep away by passing the ball back and forth to team mates.
- No dribbling is allowed.
- First team to make a total of 50 passes wins.
