Basketball drills for technique condition
Objective:
Try to score 5 times with your group as quickly as possible.
Task:
Divide the players into 2, 3 or 4 groups so that there are max. 6 of them in a group. Give each player in each group a number from 1 to 6. Each group sits in a corner of the terrain. In the middle there are 2, 3 or 4 basketballs in hoops.
When the coach says a number, the players with that number sprint to the middle as fast as they can, take a basketball and dribble to goal. They get only 1 attempt to score. After their goal attempt, they put the balls back in the middle and rejoin their group. The first group with 5 scores wins the game.
Variations/ gradations
Make scoring easier by attaching a hoop to the ring where players can also score. A score through the hoop is then worth double points.
Objective:
Reenact all the exercises, which the trainer is demonstrating.
Task:
The players stand in a (half) circle so that everyone can see the trainer. The trainer shows some exercises. The players mimic him/her. Keep the balloon in the air by tapping it up in the air. Try to clap your hands as much as possible between each tap.
- Hold the balloon in your left hand and dribble the basketball with your right hand. Successful? Try with your other hand.
- Now hold the balloon high above your head and look at the balloon. Keep dribbling with your other hand. Change hands after 1 minute.
- Dribble the basketball with your right hand and hold the balloon with your left hand. At the whistle, change hands without losing either one and without stopping dribbling.
Dribble the basketball with your right hand. Try to keep the balloon in the air with your left hand by tapping it upwards. Can you do it with your other hand?
Objective:
- Reenact all the exercises, which the trainer presents.
Mission
The players stand in a (half) circle so everybody can see the trainer. The trainer shows some exercises. The players imitate him/her.
- Stand in a circle. Roll the ball between your legs in an 8-shape.
- Roll the ball around your waist, legs and head. Change direction every now and then.
- Bounce the ball on the ground with 2 hands and catch it again with 2 hands.
- Throw the ball in the air with 2 hands and catch it again with 2 hands. Who can clap before catching the ball?
- Stand in a spread position. Move the ball between your legs in an 8-shape without letting it fall to the ground.
Prerequisites:
players must be quite proficient and in good physical condition
Organization:
after one team has scored 2 times the defenders go out of the field the winners get the ball
Ends when one team has won 5 times.
Losers have to work very hard physically afterwards. They should know this in advance so they will do their utmost to not lose.
If the MTM is not intense enough then the coach will award a score to the offensive side
Losers: (= minute drill: 45 sec full, 15 sec rest)
For each point difference in the score:
- 4 sprints back and forth across the field
- Push-ups until signal of the trainer
- 15 sec rest (players who lost by 1 point difference are finished)
- 4 sprints + sit ups until signal of the trainer
- 15 sec rest (players who lost by 2 points are finished)
- etc
If you are with 8 players:
- the two players who turn in ask one of the players who got out to join them
- players then count individually the number of times won
- Purpose:
- Reaction speed and 1 against 1
- Assignment:
- Divide the players into pairs and give them one number per pair.
- When the trainer says a number, the players with that number sprint to the center as fast as possible, grab the basketball and dribble to basket for 1 to 1.
- They get only 1 attempt to score. After their goal attempt, the ball goes back to the trainer.
- You can also call several numbers at once for 2 against 2, 3 against 3 etc.
This drill is meant to let the players work on speed, condition and a bit of footwork:
Start in corner A;
- The player will run in a row making sure that the fastest man/woman is in front, so that he sets the pace and can take the rest of the group with him.
- From point A the players will run over the blue line to the back line, then they make slides over the back line (the green line) until the bucket line, then they run backwards over the red line to the other back line, slides over the green line forward run over the blue line and again slides over the green line and backwards run over the red line.
- Then slides over the whole back line to point A.
- Every time you pass point A the exercise starts again, determine the number of repetitions according to the condition of the team and build it up as the training progresses.
- After a while you could also hang on to the exercise for example within 40 sec. 1 time. Are you too late? Push-ups, sit-ups etc.
On the picture below:
Blue = run forward
Green = slides
Red = Run backwards
Please note:
- with the slides, bend the knees, the important thing is that the movement is fast but above all is made good;
- let the players start with a few second intervals, especially when walking backwards they will get in each other's way;
- when running backwards look forward, as if you are looking at the man you are defending;
- that the lines are not cut off.
