Basketball drills

  • Up to 8 players in the center circle or freethrow circle.
  • On starting the game, each player has to protect the ball whilst attempting to knock the ball away from other players.
  • Last man standing wins!

  • Installation: 
    • For 2 players 1 ball
    • 1 player baseline
    • 1 player at free throw line with ball
  • Player baseline runs to other player and receives pass.
  • Land, crossover step, 3 dribbles, jump stop, pivot.
  • Pass to next player.
  • Across the length of the court.
  • Variations: 
    • Catch, spin, reverse pivot - heel lift when pivoting-
    • Front stop, half pivot, pivot forward
    • Jump and turn in the air, turn and face

  • 3-3 half court
  • Cone setting
  • Team that intercepts the ball first goes behind the cone before they are allowed to score.
  • The player who has the ball may dribble for up to 5 seconds then they must have passed or shot. This only counts if they have been behind the cone.

  • The players are divided into 4 corners,
  • Every 2nd player in line has a ball.
  • 2 players start and run diagonally across the field.
  • At the 3-point line they receive the pass.
  • Front to goal, feint, crossover to the ring and connect in the opposite corner.
  • The passers in turn run diagonally to the other side.

  • Starting lineup:
    • Use whole court
    • 2 players stand right on the center line ready to do lay-up
    • 2 players stand on the left center line ready to lay-up
    • 3 players stand on the right sideline, level with the free throw line
    • 3 players stand to the left on the sideline, level with the free throw line
  • Progression:
    • Players at the center line start their lay-up
    • After the lay-up they take their own rebound and give an outlet pass to the waiting player on the sideline
    • Then they join the sideline, at the level of the free throw line
    • Lay-up, bob cousy, power lay-up, lay-back, jump stop
  • Progression:
    • Change of direction at the level of the three-point line
    • Crossover, behind the back, reverse dribble at the center line
    • Coach defends, attacker adjusts
    • After lay-up, stay on defense
  • Regression:
    • Take shot instead of lay-up

  • Starting lineup:
    • 1 forward left + defense
    • 1 forward right + defense
    • 1 guard center + defense
    • 1 strong group, 1 weaker group
  • Progression:
    • Guard gives the pass to 1 of the forwards - alternating left and right
    • Forward does a v cut to run free
    • Defense tries to prevent the pass, but does not go full out yet
    • Forward goes 1-on-1 and makes a drive
  • Progression:
    • Defense weak-side must drop off when the forward gets the pass
    • Give and go with the guard instead of 1v1
    • Active defense
  • Regression:
    • Passive defense

    • 1 group baseline with ball
    • 1 group baseline without ball
    • The inner group has the ball
  • Progression:
    • Player 1 dribbles slowly to the center line
    • Player 2 does step and slide up to the center line
    • Then they play 1 against 1
  • Progression:
    • Active defense during step slide
    • Extra defender under goal
  • Regression:
    • Passive defense

    • Players stand at a cone or hat
  • Progression:
    • Set shots are taken at close range
    • Arm stretch with ball on hand, arm fold and hand turn and shoot
    • Own rebound
    • Shoot 10 times and then switch positions

    • Standing further from the goal
    • Taking correct free throw
  • Regression:
    • AFTER

  • Starting lineup:
    • 1 player at the free throw line
    • 5 players stand around the bucket
  • Course:
    • Player takes the free throw
    • Other players fight for the rebound
    • 1 point if you score the free throw
    • 1 point if you take the rebound
    • Play to 5 points
    • Each in turn, shuffle through clockwise
  • Progression:
    • 2 points if it is an offensive rebound
    • Play to 7 points
  • Regression:
    • Having fewer players rebound

  • Full field

  • Players face each other on the end line
  • In the middle are 5 cones with tennis ball on them and 5 cones without tennis ball.
At the Go signal, players dribble toward each other.
  1. High five -> change hands, cross over dribble.
  2. High collision ball next to the body, one player grabs the ball from the other. 2 times, rebound.
  3. Roll the ball simultaneously towards each other.
  4. After this, find a cone with tennis ball and move it onto a cone without tennis ball.

    • 1 player stands ready to shoot
    • 1 rebounder
  • Progression:
    • Set shots are taken at close range
    • Stretch arm with ball on hand, fold arm and turn hand and shoot
    • Shoot 10 times and then switch

    • Maximum of 5 dribbles

    • Pass may be returned to the passer
