Volleyball drills for technique block / net defense
Trainer (mid) and player on 4 at the net
Trainer throws the ball himself short behind the block or in the middle or throws the ball to 4. That player throws the ball
Defence has to solve it by sliding in well and/or standing short behind the block. SV stands behind and comes forward and gives set up to middle, left front or diagonal, who finishes the attack. Catcher puts ball back in basket.
Goal: - Defense on the right position. Who goes for which ball?
- Being able to quickly switch from defense to offense. Possible 1st tempo exercise in the middle of the attack.
1 sv stands on sv place in the field with the trainer and the other sv stands rv on the field with the rest of the players.
Accent is set up, block on outside and play smart.
If big team does a good attack then they get a point. If the ball falls on the ground or doesn't come over the net the other two players get two points. When BH is over the net each player gets 1 point. Coach throws the ball over the net 6 times (so you can get 12 points). After that change positions.
Coach plays high ball in the back.

Defending behind (from the smart ball from 1)
Defend block with dive
- 1 blocks first at the center and then at the front left - after blocking, turns around and defends back attack from 3 - then defends (in dive) short ball from 5 - 2 is next Turn over: - 1 to short ball - 3 to blocking - 5 to attack
Variation:
two defenders position 1 2.
1 blocks turns around gets a hit ball from position 4.
Ball is played underhand to each other from the 4 meter line. - After playing block on the middle - move to the right and block - under the net and block - low defence back to the line
In this exercise, positions 4 and 7 are not occupied. On the right is sv.
Accent in this exercise:
- pass, block and sv
- Try to play through and vary attacking balls: smash, hole in the middle or play on the lines left and right (in the back is difficult because there is no miss-back who can defend the ball.

Block set up
Defending behind
You divide your players into 2 teams.
* Each pair 1 ball
One of the pair is standing at the net to make a block.
The other player stands on the opposite side of the net with a ball. The player stands on the three-meter line and throws the ball just over the net.
The player standing on the three-meter line throws the ball just over the net.
* 20 balls and then switch tasks.
HEREAFTER
Blocking ball after attack
Each player remains standing for 10 blocks. The rest attack. For every ball you hit you get 1 point. It doesn't matter if you block the ball or not, but it has to be hit.
If it goes well: pay attention to the direction of your hands, block on the net (so no letter box in between).
Position 4 does not participate
SV swaps with 8 (so position 3 and 8 swap)
First with attack and after a number of balls switch positions (front / back).
You can also vary by giving different orders to attackers (where to attack and where to play the ball).

Defending behind
- Tr plays the ball to defender B
- B passes to sv sv gives a setup to position 2, 3 or 4
- C attack
- D take care of the blocking
- E tries to defend the ball
- T1 plays to playmaker 1
- set-up for 2-attack left
- 1+2 blocks, then back for attack
- T2 plays the ball to playmaker 3 who comes in from the right back
- set-up to 2 at the centre or to 1 at right front
- VARIATION: Idem: at left front
- The trainer stands on a box at the other side of the net, and the players must try to block the ball one by one.
- Step 1 is to explain when and why we block.
- A big mistake during blocking is that players mostly look at the ball.
- From the moment the ball leaves the distributor until it is hit by the attacker, they look at the ball.
- However, most of the information can be obtained from the attacker.
- Where is the ball going to be hit, how are the shoulders positioned?
- The task is to teach the players to look at the attacker after they have seen which attacker is being served by the distributor.
In this exercise
- The trainer stands behind the pair who are blocking.
- The trainer throws the ball over the net and the attackers hit the ball.
- This way the blocking players cannot follow the ball and have to look at the attacker.
- Of course, the trainer can make further technical improvements here, such as
- Position of the hands,
- what to do after the block landing
- and the way to land.
- If the trainer wants to keep his or her hands free so that they can make technical improvements as the drill continues, either an attacker can throw the ball on one at a time, or the playmakers.
Variations are:
- only an outside block
- with a mid block
- also place attackers at the midposition
The important thing is that the players focuson the attacker.
- Block with 2 teams,
- One player on each side of the net.
- One player plays a ball, just over the net.
- The other must block it.
- Pay attention to the position of the hands/fingers.
