Volleyball drills

Besides technique, communication is also important in volleyball. And both aspects also apply to this exercise. And reacting adequately to situations which go differently than normal. In such an exercise you can see very well how different players are.

Three players line up to pass (numbers 3, 4 and 5) Player 2 stands ready at the side of the same field of play. The other players stand ready with ball to serve on the other side.


  • Player 1 serves the ball (and then immediately walks to where player 2 is already standing).
  • A player passes the ball. Another player gives a setup. And the third player plays the ball over the net. All three players must play the ball, either a pass, or a setup, or an attack.
  • Once the ball is over the net, the players turn: 2 goes into the court (where 3 was first) 3 goes to mid-back, 4 goes to the spot of 5 and 5 goes the serving spot of the other half.
  • Then the next player can serve, on the drawing this is player 8. Etc.

Necessary:

  • 4 balls
  • 7-8 players
  • 1 half of the field; 2 or 3 players form a wall in the middle at 7 metres;
    • 4 persons will defend;
    • others take care of balls.
  • Starting position of the defenders is mid back line (1 person).
  • Trainer throws ball into the field from position 3 (in front of the net). 1st defender dives / passes ball to 2/3
  • Immediately after that the next ball is thrown to the next defender.
  • High tempo; players should at least try to touch the ball, better is defending & passing to 2/3

Divide the children into 2 groups; 1 counter and 1 person who does the exercise.

  • 4 hoops lie in a square.
    • The distance between the hoops is 5 metres.
    • In each hoop there is a ball.
    • The player starts in a corner with a ball in his hands.
  • Swap as many balls in a row as possible, putting the ball in the hoop.
    • The player has to look in the same direction.
  • Each player has one turn.
  • Count the number of ball changes in 45 seconds.


Instructions for the counters

  • The balls have to be placed in the hoop.
    • If the ball rolls out, the player must go back and put it back in!
  • All four hoops must be completed in order.
    • The player is not allowed to run back and forth between 2 hoops and swap balls!

move-the-ball

  • 2 teams (6,8,10 or 12 players)
  • 1 person in the field (inside 3m line).
  • Other players stand behind the 3m line in the waiting room.
  • T puts ball in play in field A or B.
  • You may only play the ball overhand within the 3m line.
  • After playing the ball step out and someone in the waiting room takes your place.
  • If you make a mistake, make sure you have the ball safe and encourage your teammates.
  • If all the players of a team are eliminated, you have a point.
    • Idem only underhand play
    • idem overhand play only outside the 3m line

IMPLEMENTATION

You can play this game with any 4 exercises you can think of.

1. Divide the group into two or three. These are the teams that will do the assignments.
2. The trainer makes a code of ten digits e.g. (24 32 14 21 33)
3. The players will do the exercises in a particular order. For example; they think the first digit is 3, so they will do exercises 3. When they have done them, they will go to the trainer and he will say whether the number is right or wrong. If the number is right, they try to guess the next number. If the number is wrong they have to do another exercise, for example exercise four, to guess the correct number.

The pair that cracks the code first wins.

  • 1 ball/person
  • Each player dribbles, at the sign of the trainer the ball is thrown as high (and far) as possible.
  • The players try to catch their ball.
  • If this works out well
    • Ball is caught with 1 foot in front.
    • After the throw the ball is clapped between the legs. (after every step)
    • Lie on your stomach after throwing the ball.
  • 2 balls/2 people
  • Player 1 has 2 balls, which she throws over in turn,
  • Player 2 catches both balls. The roles are then reversed.
    • Option 1: The balls are thrown over with increasing difficulty.
    • Option 2: the first ball is caught bra, the second ball in split.

  • Player 1 bounces the ball under the net,
  • Player 2 picks up the ball from the air and dribbles under the net.
  • Player 1 and 2 exchange places.
    • Option 1: ball is thrown over.
    • Option 2: the ball is plucked out of the air, then a high bounce and the ball is pushed over.

  • player 1 tries to get the ball in the hoop,
  • player 2 drops the ball in the hoop and catches it in split position.
    • Option 1: person 2 may choose where the hoop is.
    • Option 2: after catching the ball in the split position, the ball is built up.

  • Player 1 has 2 balls, which she throws over in turn, player 2 catches both balls.

  • In pairs, facing each other, start at the cone.
  • Place cones in the middle.
  • One cone per pair
  • First time backwards to the sideline.
  • Return forward.
  • Tapping and kneeling in reception position, waiting for the signal.
  • On command move sideways to the sideline.
  • Same side back.
  • Wait through the knees.
  • Third time knees up, back against seat.
  • Knee sit next to the cone, right leg to leave.
  • 4th time, very fast kick to the other side.
  • Lie on your stomach on the line and kick back.


back-and-forth

  • 1 person strikes out.
  • On the opposite side 3 defenders and one person in the middle to catch the ball.
  • Start from the back line. Ball must hit playmaker.
  • Teach them to stand still when taking the ball.
